Optimal mental health underpins full social participation. As people age, they confront personal and cultural challenges, the effects of which on mental health are not fully understood. The aim of this research was to learn from women of the Baby Boomer generation born — what contributes to and hinders their mental health and wellbeing. Eighteen women participated in qualitative interviews in English ; data were analysed thematically. Participants were located across Australia in rural and urban areas; not all were born in Australia.

Members of the large generation born from to are more downbeat about their lives than are adults who are younger or older, according to a new Pew Research Center Social and Demographic Trends survey. More so than those in other generations, boomers believe it is harder to get ahead now than it was 10 years ago. And they are less apt than others to say their standard of living exceeds the one their parents had when their parents were the age they are now. Boomers turn 44 to 62 this year.
Young people are now telling them that their time, more specifically, the time of their ideas, is over, and they should stop trying to run the world. But first, who exactly is a Boomer? Technically, Baby Boomers are the post- World War II generation, born between to and named for its contribution to baby-making and regenerating a world that was ravaged by war. The generation was defined by post-war hope, stability, and conspicuous-consumption prosperity.
